Week 7

This week in Get Set Go the children learnt the skill of jumping with two feet in preparation for skipping with ropes.

In Maths we have been learning about telling the time; on the hour, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour. This takes a lot of practice every day.

We have also learn about growing and repeating patterns.  Can you tell which of these are growing and which are repeating?  Do you know what will come next in each sequence?

We have been practicing our hymns for our Father's Day Mass which is next Thursday in the church at 9a.m.  All parents (especially Dads or Grand Fathers) are welcome to share in this celebration with us.  They can come to visit the classroom after if they would like.

In preparation for Book Week Mrs P reads us some short listed books.  Today we heard Rudie Nudie.  It was a very funny story that we enjoyed a lot.  For our Book Week Parade, Year 2 will be dressing up  in celebration of this book.  Of course we will not have any real rudie nudies because we are far too modest and sensible for that.  Other costume ideas are pyjamas and slippers, teddy bears, wet scraggy hair, dressing gowns, hair tied up in a towel, bubble wrapped bodies to simulate bubble bath (with something underneath!), rubber ducks, soap/shampoo...  Use your imaginations!  Please remember the children must wear safe footwear and sun safe clothing and bring a hat for play time. If the costume is unsuitable for play time then the children may bring their school uniform to change into.

Week 5

Things to do at home to help your child with maths.

•  Continue working on money skills which were in the week 3 post.  
• Practise counting in 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s to and from 100 starting at ay given number.
• Practise addition and subtraction using count on and count back strategies e.g 7+1, 10-1, 15-1etc (numbers under ten first then twenty and so on)
• Practise doubles and near doubles.  Doubles are two numbers the same e.g. 7+7   4+4 etc.  Near doubles are these plus one e.g. 8-9  5+6
• Rainbow facts.  These are any number totaling ten.  e.g. 4+6  3+7  10-9  10-3

Many children are counting on their fingers instead of using these addition and subtraction strategies.  We do them daily in class but lots of children need more practice than this.  There are loads of games in the Maths Links tab to reinforce these strategies as well as IPad or IPod Apps for more fun practice.

During Get Set Go lessons today the children learnt shot put skills.  They began with a tennis ball and practised pushing the ball not throwing it.  Then they had a go with the shot put. A shot put is a very heavy metal ball.

Today we were treated to a show about endangered animals by a theatre group called the Arts Council. It was a dress rehearsal so the show was free! We were very lucky.

Here are some recounts of the event.

On Friday 2A and 2B watched a show about endangered animals by the Arts Council.  

Firstly we met a bilby named Sharon.  I learnt that foxes and rabbits get into the bilby's burrow and steal all their food.  

Secondly we saw a dugong.  I learnt that dugongs eat sea grass and when it storms it puts poison in the sea.  

Lastly we learnt about cassowaries.  I learnt that they poo on seeds so it can grow.  

The show was incredibly funny.

On Friday 2A and 2B watched a show about endangered animals by the Arts Council.  

Firstly we met a bilby named Sharon.  I learn they are endangered and that foxes and rabbits eat their food. 

Secondly we learnt about dugongs.  I learnt that they eat sea grass and they are also endangered.

Lastly we met a cassowary named Clare.  I learnt that lots of them have got hit by cars.  

I loved the show because it was really funny.

On Friday our class watched a show about endangered animals by the Arts Council.  

Firstly we met a bilby named Sharon.  I learn that dogs and cats eat them.

Secondly we learnt about dugongs and I learnt that humans throw rubbish on the ground and the wind blows it into the sea.  The rubbish kills the sea grass which makes the animals die and they might become extinct.

Lastly we met a cassowary named Clare.  I learnt that they get hit by cars and their poo makes gardens grow.  

I loved the show because it was amazing.

Show Time
On Friday 2A and 2B watched a show about endangered animals by the Arts Council.
Firstly we saw a bilby named Sharon.  I learnt that rabbits and foxes come into their burrows and eat their food.
Secondly we learnt about dugongs.  I learnt that if you use washing detergent the sea gets polluted.
Lastly we met a cassowary named Clare.  I learn seeds will come out of their bottoms when they poo.
I loved the show because they had different types of fabric on their costumes.

Secondly we learn about about dugongs and I found out not to pollute our water.

Lastly we met a cassowary named Clare.  I learnt that cassowaries poo fertilizer.

I thought the show was amazing because it was funny and I got the message not to pollute land and water.

Week Four

The Olympics


The Olympics have started and we have put ourselves in the shoes of the athletes.  Look at us.

The children wrote some poems this week about olympians.  They are a five line poem known as a cinquain.  The first line is one word, the second is two words, the third is three words, the fourth is four words and the last line is one synonym for the first word.  These are the first drafts.

We are finished learning all the entries and exits necessary for cursive writing and we are working on perfecting them and how to join it all up. Below is a clip about our handwriting. It is selling a program for schools to buy but has some interesting information for parents who are wondering how their child is learning to write.  This 'new' writing began in Queensland schools in the late 1980s early 1990s so it isn't really new any more but still different to the way many parents learnt handwriting.
