Next, they opened the box and quickly estimated the number of Smarties from a glance. The children then counted and sorted their Smarties according to color. They completed a table which included tally marks to count the lollies.
The next task was to graph the data using a bar graph.
Lastly, we discussed the probability of picking out a certain color Smartie from the box. Was it likely or unlikely to choose a particular colour.
This was a great hands on investigation which covered a lot of mathematical concepts but was fun too. Of course the children could eat them in the end.
I have added a few more maths games to match our learning into the Maths Links Tab. They are about chance, probability and fractions and they have pictures so you can easily find them.
We also had some fun with science today. Our unit is called All Mixed Up and is about mixtures. We had three stimulus pictures to start us off.
We created a mind map about what we knew about mixtures. Our novel George's Marvellous Medicine gave us loads of ideas. The leaders of each group got to wear our new lanyards and were responsible for collecting equipment and putting it back.
We then had some hands on experience with mixing things together. The children created three different mixtures with cocoa, icing sugar and rice bubbles and recorded them with illustrations. The rice bubbles didn't mix in very well!
Joshua had his birthday on Saturday and brought in some yummy cakes to share with us. He also brought his favorite present to show us and the kids all had a turn. It was amazing!
Conner made Pink Bircher Muesli which tasted delicious.
Look in your child's Home Folder next week for a Zoo Whiz username and password. I have signed our class up and children are welcome to play these English and Maths games from home.
Please send back the Excursion Permission Forms.
This week we have been learning about 3D and 2D shapes. Watch this clip and see if you know all these shapes.
