Junior Master Chefs Week 7

Unfortunately, I missed the live performances of Master Chef but luckily they were videoed for me and I watched them all this afternoon.  What great performances!  I wish I had the taste tests.  The food looked really yummy and healthy.  Here are some snaps from the videos I watched today.

Claudia made rissoles that she makes with her Dad.  I liked her photo board because it grew before my eyes.

Elizabeth was helped by Mikayla and Emma and looked great in the costume as she showed the class how to make Fruit Kebabs.

Finn wowed the audience with his apple slinky.  That was a really big bag of apple slinkies he made at home to share.

Freya created a delicious looking juice that made me think of a tropical island because of the tiny umbrellas as decoration.  Presentation really is important.

Imogen had some fruit sticks that were a little bit decadent with chocolate and marshmallows.  She even had a little song in her presentation.  Look out for Monty everyone!
I watched Maya today make a pizza.  She has a pizza oven in her kitchen!!!  What an actress!

Look at the size of this whopper pizza!
Melina made Apple Jelly Cups.  They must have been good.  Look at the children reaching for a recipe to take home.

Nicholas made fruit sticks with lovely shapes.  He had watermelon stars and rockmelon balls.  MMMMM!

Niamh demonstrated how to create hotcakes with fruit salad and yogurt.

Geordan had some yummy fruit sticks for his presentation. Those strawberries were extra sweet!

A few children seemed to miss their presentation this week.  They can bring it along any day next week and we will fit them in.  Our presentations are compulsory and form part of our Speaking and Listening assessment. Theo is our exception and he will be opening his shop for children to play in as part of his assessment. We had a little go last week as he was practicing being a shop manager.  Lots of children were very keen to participate.  We can't wait Theo.

If you have lost the information, here it is again.

Speaking and Listening Assessment Term 2 2012

Task: Present a Master Chef healthy, cooking display to the class.

This task will be prepared and rehearsed at home.  The children are expected to demonstrate their knowledge of a procedural text and healthy eating through a cooking presentation.

Due to our limited resources at school there will be no actual cooking done at school. Therefore there are two choices.
1.    You could prepare a dish, which is put together rather than actually cooked.  Ideas include; ham and salad wrap, fruit salad and custard, pinwheel sandwiches, dip, salsa etc.
2.    You could cook the dish at home and take photos along the way.  Include photos of the preparation, the steps and the clean up.  This should be presented on a large chart (like a flow chart) for your child to use as a prompt when explaining their demonstration to the class. Ideas include homemade pizza, quiche etc. A PowerPoint is also an option (send this on a USB).

Demonstrations should be no longer than 5 minutes so if cutting up is required then it should be done at home and sent along prepared for your child.

Samples of your dish may be provided for the class but this is not compulsory.  For example if they demonstrate a ham and salad wrap then send in 30 slices of wrap.  A small piece of the dish is all that is necessary to give the class a taste, not a meal.

Your child will have a desk in front of them to either put their poster on or assemble their dish on. A small amount of freezer space is available but there will be no heating facilities.  If your recipe needs to be hot then bring it in hot and we will do it first thing in the morning.  (Except Wed & Fri)

A Master Chef costume will be provided at school.  Children can wear their own costume if they prefer.  There is no need to go and purchase anything.

Your child will be assessed on this display as part of the Speaking and Listening strand of English.  They should play close attention to their posture, a clear loud speaking voice, evidence of eye contact with the audience, knowledge of the subject, use of verbs in their demonstrate like – mix, gently pour, whisk quickly, place, stir etc, list of equipment and ingredients and evidence of rehearsal.  It would be best if your child tells us of their demonstration rather than simply reading it off the recipe.  They could have some simple notes to refer to that list what they should say and the order.

An example of a Master Chef Presentation. (This is not a healthy recipe! Please present only healthy recipes in class.)

Good morning/afternoon Ms Taylor and Year 2.  Today I will be demonstrating how to make a delicious chocolate sundae.

For this recipe I need a bucket of Neapolitan ice cream, a packet of hundreds and thousands and chocolate topping.

The equipment I need to prepare this yummy recipe is an ice cream scoop and a bowl for serving.

Firstly I open the ice cream and carefully scoop out a ball of each of the three flavours of ice cream and place them in the serving bowl.

Next I sprinkle hundreds and thousands over the balls of ice cream.

Then I gently pour a thin line of chocolate topping over the sprinkles.

Lastly I poke a wafer into the middle ball of ice cream and it is ready to serve.

Thank you for watching my Master Chef display.

This recipe could be demonstrated at school (if it were healthy) and 30 spoons could be provided so the students could have a spoonful each as a taste.

I have an allergy to the smell and taste of curries, Thai food and coriander so please do not bring these.
For the safety of all, hands will be washed before eating.

I look forward to your presentations,

Ms Taylor
