Super Powers, Get Set Go Lessons and Simultaneous Story Time

At 10.30 am we participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time.  We listened to Mrs P read the story on You Tube and some of us had a turn at the IPad app that Mrs Hutchins purchased for us.

Here is another version which is not as great as Mrs P's version but still enjoyable.

We also learnt the ow sound. Then we got onto super powers because power has the sound in it.  Here are some of our ideas.

This week in Get Set Go lessons the children learnt basketball skills.
It is very important to hold your bouncing hand like a spider and push the ball down with the pads of your fingers not your finger tips or palms.  You should also try to bounce the ball a little in front of your body and just to the side otherwise it lands on your feet.  If you push too hard you cannot control the ball and if you push too softly you have to crouch right down and this would not be good in a game. When the teacher says to freeze the children all put the ball between their feet so they can listen to the next instruction.  It was the teacher's birthday today.  We could tell because she was wearing a giant birthday badge so we sang Happy Birthday to her.  Happy birthday, Janet.

Reminder : Don't forget our Virtue Assembly is on Friday.  All are welcome to attend.

Today we started working with the number 100.  Here are some examples of what can make 100.

Today Theo had loads of fun working with Mrs Hutchins.  They were acting out parts of a story.  Check out these great moves

.

We followed instructions again.  There is a great improvement of all children in their ability to listen once to an instruction and follow it exactly.  All the children were given three counters and they looked at all the dog pictures and voted with their counters on which samples would be showcased on the blog.  The following were the ones most voted for.  I think they are fantastic and they each seem to have their own distinct personality.

Imogen brought in some books from her Dad's collection.  It was a boxed set and they was in great condition. I wonder if he enjoyed them when he was a boy?

Thursday

Today Freya brought in some old school readers to show us.

We followed an oral procedural text to draw from Activity TV.  Ms Taylor noticed the children are improving at following the directions quickly and there is less need to pause the video.

Master Chef notes went home this week.  Please ensure your child is ready for their presentation on the allocated day.  This project is only prepared at home.  If you need more information or clarification please come to see me or send a note with your child.  Happy cooking!

We have been practising for our assembly which is next Friday. All are very welcome.  It begins at 9am in the Church.  This is a clip of our song so you can all sing it at home to help you learn it faster.  Some children have reading parts in this assembly and a copy of their words went home on Monday in their homework folder.  It was glued to a coloured piece of paper.  They should read over this at home until they are fluent so it is less stressful on the day.

Tuesday

The Parent Teacher Interviews began this week.  Please check your time to see which day you are this week or next week. Thank you for making the time to come to speak with me about your child's progress.

Many parents who are listening to their children read are very good at telling their child to "sound it out" when they come across a word they cannot read.  Here is a copy of some reading strategies we use that may help you when sounding it out doesn't work. Stop and start over is useful if it doesn't make sense.  The whole purpose of reading is to gain understanding so the children need to stop and reread if it doesn't make sense.  Another idea is to 'chunk' the words.  For example if the word was information the key is to break it up     in  -  form  -  a  -  tion.  Using this skill they can find little words within the larger word that they know.  Skip it and read over is useful because they can often guess the word from the first letter if they read on and know what the whole sentence says.

I also found this video that may be useful to help you help your child with comprehension.

Today I filmed the children in our morning prayer routine to let you see what we do.  We create a reverent atmosphere with the prayer bells and the rainstick.  We centre our focus in the middle of the prayer circle with a sacred space and we begin with our class prayer.  Each child has the opportunity to hold the prayer rock and offer a prayer.  If they don't have anything to say they say a prayer in their hearts and pass the rock on. We often sing a hymn with actions. It is a calming and reverent way to begin the day.

This afternoon in History, the children got to read a selection of Readers from the 1950s to 1970s.
We then compared them to our own readers and wrote about the similarities and differences.
