Yesterday we were discussing old wives' tales. Did you know if a kookaburra sits on your clothes line the mother of the house is going to have a baby?
Mrs Robinson told us if you poke your tongue out at someone the wind might change and you will stay with your tongue out forever.
Joseph said it was bad luck to be inside a house with your umbrella up, under a ladder with a black cat. We decided this was a superstition not an old wives' tale.
Can you think of any? Leave us a comment.
Dear children and Mrs Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI thought of the about with breaking a mirror and having 7 years of bad luck, but I suppose that is more to do with superstition than old wives' tales.
So how about this one: 'Don't swallow a gum because it will stay in your tummy for seven years.'
Regards and have a nice day!

Hi 2B
ReplyDeleteMy Nanna used to say you only get hiccups when you tell a lie. This is funny isn't it? I am sure it is not true.

Hi again 2B and Ms Taylor
ReplyDeleteAnother Old Wives' tale I just thought of is that if you go outside with wet hair on a cold day, you will end up with a cold. You really only catch a cold when you get the germs from someone who is sick. Don't forget to cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze!

Hello Terrific 2T - When I was young, I was told that "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" and "eat your crusts, it will make your hair curly". I don't think either are true, but eating an apple is very healthy for you. From percy's Nanny Lizzie
ReplyDeleteOur favourite one is that if you watch too much TV you will get square eyes. Callum's brother Connor actually thought that was true when he was little and asked me to check his eyes in a mirror after he had watched two movies in a row! Do you think his eyes looked any different?
ReplyDeleteHi 2t,
ReplyDeleteI love old wives' tales - they make me laugh! How about these:
Eating carrots will help your eyesight!
If you touch a toad you will get warts!
If you cross your eyes and the wind blows your eyes will stay like that!
From Hannah l's mum, Lisa
If you stand in front of the TV you get square eyes. love Niamh and Freya
