Spinal Education Awareness Team - S.E.A.T

Michael and Christie are in wheelchairs and they came to tell us about how to protect our spinal cords and brains. The Year 2 and 3 children listened very intently and then got to ask some questions at the end.

Nicholas asked how Michael got in the shower.  Michael said he has a bathroom that is all flat and big. He wheels in in his chair and then swaps over to a plastic chair.  He gets undressed and uses the shower curtain to cover his wheelchair so it doesn't get wet.  He washes himself and then gets back into his wheelchair and goes into his bedroom.  he slides over to the bed and gets dressed there.  It takes about an hour and a half to have a shower and get dressed.  Michael told the children he needs to lift up his trousers to pick up his legs and he doesn't wear socks because they are too hard to put on.

Michael told us that wheelchairs do not have brakes so they just have to hold on tight to stop the wheels spinning.  He said his hands get very hot from the friction if the wheels are spinning fast.

He also told us that he can play many sports like basket ball and he has a different wheelchair for each sport.  They are very expensive.

After the talk the children in 2B remembered many facts.

We all agreed that being in a wheelchair would be really hard and we will care for our spines and brains.
